When things fall into place

I am sitting on the terrace, laptop turned on, my down jacket fully closed, watching myself breathe. Fall is clearly about to defeat summer once again – the leaves have turned yellow and although I look into a sunny sky, it is actually really chilly. Still, I am evaluating the latest solution that shall help me survive temperatures of up to 37 centigrade.
For those of you who are not aware of my temperature challenge: Due to quadriplegia, my body has lost all temperature control. In surroundings exceeding 28 centigrade, I get fever. It’s linear - one degree body temperature more with each degree more outside. This results in a body temperature of 41 centigrade at an outside temperature of 32 centigrade. Or death in excess of that. Unless there is efficient artificial cooling available.
Sometimes life acts in strange ways when you start off for an impossible target with nothing but firm belief in success – which is one of the core theories in our 30Reasons movie project. My first application to 63 lodges worldwide asking if I could go fly fishing for Tarpon, Permit and other species by wheelchair without finger function resulted in just 3 responses – and only one fully accessible and willing lodge, El Pescador in Belize. Some Saturdays ago, I was going through Facebook news when I realized several posts regarding Peacock Bass. I messaged the sender, Javier Guevara, owner and guide of Ecuador Fly Fishing Tours, Inc (www.ecuadorflyfishingtours.com) just asking if he could imagine any place in the world where it might be possible to fish for Peacock Bass in my physical state. He had an instant look at our website & trailer and 3 hours later he had developed a plan with Alejandro Diaz, guide and CEO of Tucunare Lodge, Colombia (www.tucunarelodge.com):
We received a fully sponsored invitation to Tucanare Lodge for January 2017, if we showed up in time in Bogota, Colombia! An unexpected and very generous offer – which we sadly had to turn down after lengthy internal discussions.
There was a huge list of obstacles and my wife Mathanja asked all the right questions straight from the beginning: it was too much responsibility just for Berthold to take me into the jungle alone despite him having to film. We would have lacked experienced physical & medical assistance; the lodge had no air conditioning and relying on just ice on the boat was too risky in temperatures of up to 37 centigrade, and so on. The list seemed endless.
Then, something I have not yet experienced in my life happened:
Alejandro and Javier carefully considered all of the obstacles and challenges – and offered solutions to each and every hindering factor: they offered to build ramps & wider doors, have me carried over eroded sand and stairs to the river and even spoke to the Colombian Tourist Authority Procolombia who were excited about the project and are now providing support and resources, too.
When we were somewhat reluctant to hire a non-english speaking caregiver from the local indigenous community, they even solved this challenge so we can bring a third team member covering experienced caregiving, medical- and mental support.
Still, the trip remained threatened by the very critical temperature issue. The lodge has an open roof so air conditioning cannot be efficiently be installed in a room. With the jungle nights being colder, Alejandro & Javier came-up with a solution again: the idea to establish a mobile air conditioning device in a tent so I survive mid-day heat in the “cool-tent”, can fish early mornings and late afternoons cooled with ice from the lodge’s ice machine and sleep in a safe room at night.
So here we are: an offer for the physically and mentally most challenging trip yet - and no excuses!
No need to say we are going!
Tucunare Lodge, Colombia
I do admit that I am still concerned of what awaits us. But beyond the fishing itself, this is a rare chance to experience a sustainable tourism project to protect natural resources instead of exploiting them. Tucunare Lodge and the local indigenous communities of the SIKUANI have found an agreement that provides the community with a money source and reason to protect and preserve their natural resources in return for catch & release fishing access for a limited number of fishermen per year. Almost every family in the community works in Tucunare Lodge in a rotating principle during fishing season. With Colombia having exceptionally intact natural resources opening up for tourism now, such projects will hopefully become a role model in future and we look forward to get deeper insights into this specific approach run by Alejandro Diaz and the local indigenous communities.
The sustainability aspect of the trip, the exceptional nature and the interesting culture of the SIKUANI even persuaded my wife to participate in this adventure. Now that she is joining in as our third team member, this trip will probably be as safe as it ever could get for me.
For all remaining risks especially related to my physical state, we picked up contact to Global Rescue (www.globalrescue.com) to make sure we have a reliable and capable partner at hand on a 24/7 basis.
Despite all my personal challenges, if you look at the beautiful Vichada and Orinoco Rivers and its wild species waiting for us, it obviously becomes a trip of a lifetime you simply have to do if you ever get the chance:

The lodge is not located in an environment designed for wheelchair convenience, and certainly not fully accessible. It would have been easy for Alejandro & Javier not to care. But instead they are making this trip happen for me. Think about it! If you only let it, sometimes life reveals limitless beauty and potential. Almost as if everything was possible…

Cuando las cósas suceden como deben de suceder

Estoy sentado en la terraza, con la computadora portátil encendida, mi abrigo completamente cerrado, observandome respirar. El otoño está claramente a punto de derrotar una vez mas al verano - las hojas se han vuelto otra vez amarillas y aunque miro a un cielo soleado, en realidad está muy frío. Sin embargo, estoy evaluando la última solución que me ayudaría a sobrevivir temperaturas de hasta 37 grados centígrados.
Para aquellos ustedes que quiza no estan concientes de mi desafío físico con la temperatura: Debido a la cuadriplejia, mi cuerpo ha perdido todo el control del sentido de la temperatura. En un entorno de más de 28 grados centígrados, puedo padecer de mucha fiebre. Es lineal - un grado más de temperatura corporal por cada grado de temperatura del exterior. Por ejemplo una temperatura corporal de 41 centígrados a una temperatura exterior de 32 centígrados. O la muerte en exceso por eso. A menos que haya una refrigeración artificial eficiente y disponible.
A veces la vida actúa de manera extraña en especial cuando tienes como meta un objetivo imposible con nada más que la firme creencia en el éxito - que a su vez es una de las teorías básicas en nuestro proyecto de la película 30Reasons. (30Rasones) Mi primera solicitud a 63 Lodge en todo el mundo preguntando si podía ir a pescar con mosca el Tarpon, Palometa y otras especies en mi silla de ruedas sin función de mis dedos resultó en sólo 3 respuestas - y sólo un lodge completamente accesible y dispuesto, el cual fue “El Pescador” en Belice. Algunos sábados atrás, estaba revisando noticias de Facebook cuando me di cuenta de varias publicaciones relacionadas con el Tucunaré (Peacock Bass). Envie un mensaje a la persona que las publicaba , Javier Guevara, dueño y guía de Ecuador Fly Fishing Tours, Inc. (www.ecuadorflyfishingtours.com), preguntando si podía indicarme algun lugar en el mundo donde pudiese ser posible pescar Tucunaré (Peacock Bass) en mi estado físico . El dio una mirada instantánea a nuestro sitio web y al corto cinematográfico, 3 horas más tarde el había desarrollado un plan conjuntamente con Alejandro Díaz, guía y CEO de Tucunare Lodge, Colombia (www.tucunarelodge.com):
Recibimos una invitación totalmente patrocinada a Tucanare Lodge para Enero del 2017, simplemente si nos presentamos a tiempo en Bogotá, Colombia! Una oferta inesperada y muy generosa - que tristemente tuvimos que rechazar después de largas discusiones internas.
Había una enorme lista de obstáculos y mi esposa Mathanjadesde el principio hizo todas las preguntas correctas: era demasiada la responsabilidad sólo para Berthold el llevarme a la selva solo a parte que el tenia que simultaneamente filmar. Nos hubiese faltado ayuda física y asistencia médica; El lodge no tenía aire acondicionado y confiarnos de sólo tener hielo en el bote era demasiado riesgoso con temperaturas de hasta 37 grados centígrados. La lista parecía interminable.
Entonces, algo que todavía no havia experimentado en mi vida sucedió:
Alejandro y Javier consideraron cuidadosamente todos los obstáculos y desafíos y ofrecieron soluciones a todos y cada uno de los factores que nos tenían preocupados: ellos nos ofrecieron construir rampas y puertas más amplias, sugirierón hasta cargarme sobre arena erosionada y escaleras hasta y desde el río. Incluso hablaron con la Autoridad de Turismo Colombiana “Procolombia”, quienes estan muy entusiasmados con el proyecto y ahora están brindando apoyo y recursos.
Estábamos algo indecisos de contratar a un ayudante que no hablaba inglés de la comunidad indígena local, y ellos resolvieron este reto, nos permitieron traer un tercer miembro del equipo que cubriese los cuidados expertos, apoyo médico y mental.
Sin embargo, el viaje siguió siendo amenazado por el problema de la temperatura muy crítica. El Lodge tiene un techo abierto, por lo que el aire acondicionado no puede ser instalado de manera eficiente en lahabitación. Con las noches de la selva siendo más frías, Alejandro & Javier volvieron a encontrar una solución: la idea de establecer un dispositivo de aire acondicionado móvil en una tienda de campaña, para así yo poder sobrevivir el calor del medio día en la "tienda aclimatada", tambien sugirieron elpoder pescar tenprano por la mañana y las tardes refrescandome con hielo de la máquina del lodge, y por las noches dormiria en una habitación segura y comoda.
Así que aquí estamos: con una oferta para el viaje más difícil que físicamente y mentalmente he realizado - no hay más excusas!
Solo necesitamos decir que vamos!
Tucunare Lodge, Rio Vichada - Colombia
Tengo que admitirlo que todavía estoy preocupado por lo que nos espera. Pero más allá de la pesca, esta es una rara oportunidad de experimentar un proyecto de turismo sostenible para proteger los recursos naturales en lugar de explotarlos. Tucunare Lodge y las comunidades indígenas locales del SIKUANI han llegado a un acuerdo que proporciona a la comunidad una fuente de dinero y razones para proteger y preservar sus recursos naturales a cambio de el capturar y liberar lo que se pesca tambien limitando elnúmerode pescadores por año. Casi cada familia en la comunidad trabaja en Tucunare Lodge en modlidad rotativa durante la temporada de pesca. En Colombia con recursos naturales excepcionalmente intactos abriéndo sus recursos para el turismo, estos proyectos se convertirán en un modelo a seguir en el futuro y esperamos profundizarnos mas en este enfoque específico dirigido por Alejandro Díaz y las comunidades indígenas locales.
El aspecto sostenible del viaje, la belleza excepcional de la naturaleza salvajey la interesante cultura de la comunidad SIKUANI incluso convencieron a mi esposa de participar en esta aventura. Ahora que ella se está uniendo como nuestro tercer miembro del equipo, este viaje será probablemente tan seguro como otros viajes que he realizado en mi vida.
Por todos los riesgos que especialmente se relacionan con mi estado físico, realizamos el contacto con Global Rescue (www.globalrescue.com) para asegurarnos de tener un respaldo medico fiable a la mano las 24 horas del día por el transcurso del viaje.
A pesar de todos mis desafíos personales, si nos fijamos en los hermosos ríos Vichada y Orinoco y sus especies silvestres que nos esperan, obviamente este viaje se convierte en un viaje de toda la vida que simplemente se tiene que realizar si se tiene la oportunidad:

El Lodge no se encuentra en un ambiente diseñado para la una silla de ruedas, y ciertamente no muy accesible. Habría sido fácil para Alejandro y Javier no importarles. Pero en su lugar están haciendo posible este viaje. ¡Piénsalo! Si tu lo permites, a veces la vida te revela belleza y potencial ilimitado. Casi como si todo fuera posible ...

Der Herbst ist offensichtlich dabei den Sommer wieder einmal zu besiegen – die Blätter sind gelb und obwohl ich in einen sonnigen Himmel schaue, ist es tatsächlich richtig kalt. Dennoch überdenke ich gerade die neueste Lösung, um bei 37 Grad Celsius zu überleben.
Für diejenigen von Euch, die sich meines Temperaturproblems nicht bewusst sind: Durch die Tetraplegie hat mein Körper jegliche Temperaturkontrolle verloren. In einer Umgebung von mehr als 28 Grad Celsius bekomme ich Fieber. Es ist linear – ein Grad Körpertemperatur mehr mit jedem Grad mehr Umgebungstemperatur. Das ergibt eine Körpertemperatur von 41 Grad Celsius bei 32 Grad Außentemperatur. Oder den Tod darüber. Es sei denn, eine effiziente künstliche Kühlung ist verfügbar.
Manchmal passieren im Leben seltsame Dinge, wenn man sich aufmacht ein unmögliches Ziel zu erreichen mit nichts als dem festen Glauben an Erfolg – eine der wesentlichen Theorien in unserem 30Reasons Filmprojekt. Meine erste Anfrage an 63 Lodges weltweit, ob ich dort auf Tarpon, Permit und andere Spezies mit dem Rollstuhl und ohne Fingerfunktionen Fliegenfischen könnte, resultierte in nur 3 Antworten – und nur einer vollständig behindertengerechten und bereitwilligen Lodge, El Pescador in Belize. Vor einigen Samstagen ging ich durch Facebook Nachrichten und entdeckte einige Posts über Peacock Bass. Ich schrieb eine Nachricht an den Urheber, Javier Guevara, Eigentümer und Guide von Ecuador Fly Fishing Tours, Inc (www.ecuadorflyfishingtours.com) und fragte ihn lediglich, ob er sich eine Gegend in der Welt vorstellen könne, wo es möglich wäre in meinem körperlichen Zustand auf Peacock Bass zu fischen. Er schaute sich unmittelbar unsere Website & Trailer an und drei Stunden später hatte er mit Alejandro Diaz, Guide und CEO der Tucunare Lodge, Kolumbien (www.tucunarelodge.com) einen Plan entworfen:
Wir erhielten für Januar 2017 eine vollständig gesponserte Einladung in die Tucanare Lodge mitten im kolumbianische Dschungel, wenn wir bloß rechtzeitig in Bogota, Kolumbien auftauchten! Eine unerwartete und sehr großzügige Einladung – die wir leider nach langer Diskussion ablehnen mussten.
Es gab eine riesige Liste an Hindernissen und meine Frau Mathanja stellte von Beginn an die richtigen Fragen: Abgesehen davon, dass er filmen musste, war es zu viel Verantwortung für Berthold allein mit mir in den Dschungel zu reisen. Uns hätte erfahrene physische und medizinische Unterstützung gefehlt; die Lodge hatte keine Klimaanlage und sich nur auf Eis auf dem Boot zu verlassen wäre in Temperaturen von bis zu 37 Grad zu risikoreich gewesen, und so weiter. Die Liste schien endlos.
Dann passierte etwas, dass ich in meinem Leben so noch nicht erlebt habe:
Alejandro und Javier überdachten sorgfältig alle Hindernisse und Herausforderungen – und fanden Lösungen für jeden einzelnen einschränkenden Faktor: Sie boten an Rampen & weitere Türen zu bauen, mich über erodierten Sandboden und Treppen zum Fluss zu tragen und sprachen sogar mit der kolumbianischen Tourismusbehörde, die begeistert von dem Projekt war und nun ebenfalls Unterstützung und Hilfe leistet.
Als wir zögerten eine nicht-englischsprachige Pflegekraft vom lokalen Stamm der Indios zu mieten, lösten Sie sogar dieses Problem, so dass nun ein drittes Teammitglied anreisen kann, was die notwendige erfahrene Pflege, medizinische und mentale Unterstützung abdeckt.
Dennoch blieb der Trip von den sehr kritischen Temperaturen bedroht. Die Lodge hat ein offenes Dach, weshalb eine Klimaanlage nicht sinnvoll eingesetzt werden kann. Da die Dschungelnächte recht kühl sind, fanden Alejandro & Javier auch dafür eine Lösung: die Idee ein mobiles Klimagerät in einem Zelt zu installieren damit ich die Mittagshitze darin überlebe, um morgens und nachmittags gekühlt mit Eis aus der Eismaschine der Lodge zu fischen und nachts in der Sicherheit der Lodgeräume zu schlafen.
Da waren wir also: Mit einem Angebot für den physisch und mental herausforderndsten Trip bis jetzt – und keinen Ausreden!
Keine Frage, dass wir fahren!
Tucunare Lodge, Kolumbien
Ich gebe zu, dass ich immer noch Bedenken habe, was uns erwartet. Aber abgesehen vom Fischen selbst ist es eine seltene Gelegenheit, ein nachhaltiges Tourismusprojekt zu sehen, welches die natürlichen Ressourcen schützt anstatt sie auszubeuten. Die Tucunare Lodge und der lokale Indiostamm der SIKUANI haben ein Abkommen gefunden, welches der Gemeinschaft eine Geldquelle und einen Grund bietet, ihre natürlichen Ressourcen zu beschützen und erhalten. Dafür geben Sie einer geringen Anzahl von Anglern im Jahr Zugang zum Catch & Release fischen. Fast jede Familie arbeitet während der Angelsaison im Rotationsprinzip in der Tucunare Lodge. Bei den außergewöhnlich intakten natürlichen Ressourcen die sich in Kolumbien nun dem Tourismus öffnen, werden sich solche Projekte zukünftig hoffentlich als Rollenmodell etablieren. Wir freuen uns darauf einen tieferen Einblick in den spezifischen Ansatz zu bekommen, den Alejandro Diaz und die lokalen Indio-Gemeinden verwirklicht haben.
Der Aspekt der Nachhaltigkeit dieses Trips, die außergewöhnliche Natur und die interessante Kultur der SIKUANI haben sogar meine Frau überzeugt an diesem Abenteuer teilzunehmen. Nun da sie als unser drittes Teammitglied dabei ist, wird der Trip wohl so sicher für mich, wie er nur werden kann.

Völlig abgesehen von meinen persönlichen Herausforderungen - schaut man auf die wundervollen Flüsse Vichada und Orinoko und die wilde Artenvielfalt die dort auf uns wartet, ist das ganz klar eine Reise des Lebens die man einfach machen muss, wenn man jemals die Chance bekommt:

Die Lodge liegt nicht in einer Umgebung die für angenehme Aufenthalte im Rollstuhl gemacht ist, und ist keinesfalls vollständig rollstuhlgerecht. Es wäre ein Leichtes für Alejandro & Javier gewesen, sich nicht zu kümmern. Stattdessen machen Sie diese Reise für mich möglich. Denkt mal darüber nach! Wenn man es lässt, offenbart das Leben zuweilen nahezu unbegrenzte Schönheit und Möglichkeiten. Fast, als wäre alles denkbar…
